Lucas Romanek, went into the weekend with a point lead in the national championship, with the additional support of the Zzoomm full fibre broadband employees and friends, as they also celebrate their summer party at Donington on Saturday 17th June 23.
Chris Middlehurst qualified on pole for race one, with Lucas starting in second place, Chris led the first couple of laps, with Lucas following closely behind, on lap 3 Lucas made the move, diving inside Middlehurst at Macleans bend, and completed his move for the lead into Coppice.
Middlehurst then immediately came under pressure from the chasing pack, which was led by McCaughan, which allowed Romanek to build a one-second gap. Lucas had extended his lead to 1.3s, before Middlehurst reclaimed 2nd position and posted the fastest lap to reduce the deficit by 0.6s.
With McCaughan in-tow, Middlehurst caught Romanek as the cars started the final lap, and Middlehurst made the better exit from Old Hairpin to draw alongside. McCaughan moved to the left of the pair to make it three-wide approaching Macleans before snatching second back from Middlehurst on the track, and Lucas Romanek held on for the win.
The win at Donington, brings his overall races wins to 3 in the National Championship.
After the race, Lucas said, ‘I had to work hard, first off trying to stick with Chris, once I got past, I could see them battling behind, once Chris got clear, he found some good pace midsection and caught me up, somehow I managed to hang on’. ‘I enjoy the Donington GP circuit, it is a fast, challenging track, and it is great to have the support of the Zzoomm summer party’.
Next race weekend will be at Brands Hatch in the United and Champion of brands series, 2nd July 2023.
